The festival was first held in 2016, and the number of participants rises with each passing year. Last year, over 50,000 attendees came together to take part in the beauty of music. This year’s event will continue with and build upon those of the past: 16 amazing performance groups, 4 dance workshops, 5 international lectures, and a bazaar with over 100 stalls where you can eat, drink, and enjoy hands-on experiences! It will be an event of brilliant shows and a venue with lots going on. At this event that’s great for people of all ages, you will have the opportunity to cross national borders, and don’t forget to bring your friends along! Amazing world music groups from abroad, including ancient Incan music, Middle Eastern rock, and a taste of the boundless gypsy culture. The theme of the 2018 World Music Festival @ Taiwan is “Ecstasy in Singing and Dancing,” and every effort has been made to bring diversity into the mix. The groups from abroad this year share a common characteristic: they are all from distant countries and strongly emanate a sense of folk culture: the 40-year-old Hungarian band Muzsikás, a big name on the world music stage, will make its first appearance in Taiwan with its well-known gypsy music; SISAY, a group from the Andes that incorporates traditional Incan music into contemporary styles, is sure to put on a good show with its penetrative force; Yemen Blues, a band from Israel with a Middle-Eastern style, is always in strong demand by world music festival organizers around the globe; Ilu Leto, a sape music and dance group, will delight listeners with sounds from the tropical rainforests of Sarawak, Borneo; DuOud, a French duo, cleverly mixes the oud with electronic music. And let’s not forget our exceptional Taiwanese groups: Matzka, a reggae band of indigenous musicians who have won Golden Melody Awards; Hakka folk songwriter and performer Chen Yong-tao; the Taiwu Ancient Ballads Troupe, a group of indigenous singers with captivating voices; the first collaborative performance between Chio-Tian Folk Drums & Arts Troupe and DJ Code, in which they will bring together traditional percussion and electronic music; and more! So get ready for incredible performances of unique styles by all 16 of our local and visiting music groups!
